Age: 150 (looks to be in his late twenties) D.O.B.: Unknown Blood Type: M Race: Merfolk Level: N/A Powers: Just those common to merfolk Physical Description: Squid's merform is very long, he's seven feet from head to the tip of his tail. His tail is very dark gray with a silver sheen to it, he is often mistaken for a dolphin when people see him dive or swimming in the lake. He is darkly tanned from all of the time he spends on land, his skin has a silverish tinge to it when he's in his truth form, as does his hair and eyes. His hair is black and chin length, usually worn in loose waves. He has dark eyes that are almost black, and always appear to be examining something. His human form is tall, (6'2") and muscular, although he's very lean and lithe. He has a large collection of human things, clothing, jewellry, trinkets, dinghoppers, etc. He likes clothing that don't restrict his movement and is in colors that don't occur naturally. So he often looks like a surf bum with no fashion sense. He wears whatever he decided he wants to at the time, which leads to some pretty interesting outfit and jewelery combos. Personality: Squid is curious, playful and friendly. He finds humans and other creatures related to them endlessly fascinating. They have so many wonderful things they've created and they rush around and fuss over silly things. It's so easy to entertain them too. He could play with them for days at a time. And does. Most of the time, the playing isn't malicious, but if one crosses him, well, he's not opposed to making them into a snack. He loves the beach. Not only can he swim to his heart's content, it's the easiest place for him to find people to play with. He is an attention whore and a show off, nothing makes him happier than the applause he gets for simple displays of dancing, acrobatics and other performances. He's taken to some beach sports and is a killer surfer. When he decides to venture further onto land, he'll do street magic tricks and perform pantomime in parks. He loves music and dance of any sort and will imitate and interact with other street performers more often than others. He hates merbabies, but loves human children. They love to play and frolick and are a whole lot more interesting than some of their adult counterparts. A consummate flirt, he will come onto anyone who catches his interest. Age, gender, species doesn't matter. To him, they're all just toys anyway, and whatever he finds shiny is the one he goes after. Once the new toy is acquired, he sates his curiousity and most of the time, lets the person go feeling pretty darned good. Occasionally, they're never seen again, but that's because he has a craving. It's nothing personal or malicious, people taste good to merfolk. Since he's mute in his merform, Squid mostly uses ASL and paper and pencil to communicate. Since he's been flopping around on land for almost 70 years, he's picked up several human languages and reads, writes and understands English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish, as well as understanding Afrikaans and Hawaiian. He also knows several forms of sign language (British, French and Spanish), so his sign language in any form has a strange 'accent'. Squid has a pretty good understanding of humans, even if he doesn't understand their motives behind things. He knows what a car is and what it's used for, but not how it works. He can count, recognizes currency from several countries, understands the concept of exchange for goods and what social behaviors are basically acceptable in most human areas, but not really why this all so important. After this long, most everyday things are pretty mundane to him, electronics are still pretty new and he's ruined a couple of cellphones and mp3 players trying to take them in the water. Show him anything he hasn't seen and he'll turn it over and examine it from every angle and push buttons (he loves buttons, buttons are win) and generally do everything but bite it to see if it squeaks (he learned that wasn't kosher awhile back) trying to see what it does. And regale the owner with questions. He might steal it if it's cool enough. Other merfolk bore him, that's why he left his pod and hasn't rejoined a new one. He will mate with female merfolk when he encounters them, but he doesn't stick around afterwards. There's too much interesting to see out on the land. He's not looking to be tied down anytime soon, not when there's so much to do and explore. If confronted physically, Squid fights back. He will use his superior strength, aglity and his merfolk song to take down opponents. He prefers to fight in the water, where he has the decided advantage. He has absolutely no qualms about dragging land based foes under and drowning them. He has a long fuse, and only fights if attacked first. It's hard for him to take humans and their ilks' jibes to heart. They're so silly. Emotional entanglements just don't happen. He hasn't ever found a mermaid who can keep his attention for longer than an encounter and he really can't bring himself to get too attached to his toys. They get boring and break too easily for that. It's part of the reason he's still swimming around the world. It's almost as if he's looking for something and hasn't found it. Not that Squid would admit that. He just wants to explore and have a good time. Squid hates sharks. Hates them. That said, he hates fish poachers more. He will partake in some traditional shipwrecking if he comes across sea poachers. He loves to ruin nets and leave unpleasant surprised for when they pull in their nets. This is also why he avoids the Asian seas. He's almost gotten harpooned a couple of times by angry Chinese fisherman. No thanks, never again. There are friendlier waters. Sexuality: Experimental (considering anyone who isn't merfolk isn't even the same species, sexing up anybody on land is pretty much playing with sex toys. So it doesn't matter.) As for merfolk, yeah, he wants mermaids. But only as long as it takes to 'do his duty to his species'. History: Squid was born to a pod that mostly traversed the waters of the South Atlantic. He grew up near the beaches of South America, his pod spent every winter in Guanabara Bay. Which is how he got his first taste of humans and how interesting he they can be. When he was young, he had been breach swimming near a cruise ship and a little girl fell off. A la all of the mermaid rescue stories, he pulled her from the water off into a little inlet. He stayed with her for days, returning with food because this creature was just so interesting. She was absolutely nothing like what his parents had told him humans were like. Finally, other people found her and took her back to her human pod. He never saw her again, but his interest in humans was cemented. As soon as he was old enough to survive on his own, he took off, following the ocean currents northward. The war brewing in the northern waters sent him heading for the Pacific Ocean, stupid submariners and their games. He wasn't sorry at all about that Uboat he lured into an underwater whirlpool. But it lured him to Hawaii and there he discovered surfing, which was just coming back into style. He fell in love with the sport, which allowed him to be social with humans and enjoy the water. He became a dedicated surf bum, although he was driven out of Hawaii for a short time after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He didn't want anything to do with the human's stupid world war. He ended up in California next and continued his exploration of human beach communities. It was during the Golden Age of surfing in the 1950s he picked up his nickname. Since he was mute in his human form and couldn't write then, his surfing buddies nicknamed him Squid, because he was always in the water. And it was hipper than Fish and Shark didn't fit. He liked it, and kept it. After he got bored with California, he headed out into the Pacific and just started roaming the seas, looking for humans to hang with and new places to explore. He's lived near any coast he can find and hung around each for a few years. Except the Asian seas. Chinese fisherman and Japanese whalers are not cool. He prefers the Caribbean, the north Atlantic and the eastern Pacific Oceans, they have the best waves and the most interesting people. Along the way, he found people willing to teach him to read and write in many different languages, as well as people who taught him sign language. Now able to communicate two ways, he really started exploring human society. That was when he found out about the existence of 'supernatural creatures'. They were all basically altered humans, but still pretty cool. He just kept swimming around, looking for the next good time. Since the Light of May: Which was in Michigan of all places. He'd been to the Great Lakes before, but now, he had a real reason to be up here. The supernaturals were coming out in a big way and he didn't want to miss the party. Squid keeps his secret more often than not, but finds it very freeing that he doesn't have to stay in his human form to have a good time. And well, the tail gets him attention, which he's always good for. Special Skills/Abilities: Surfing, ASL, BSL, French Sign Language, Spanish Sign Language; Understands, reads, writes English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish, also understands Afrikaans and Hawaiian. He can speak all these languages in merform, but rarely gets a chance to, so he has a heavy accent. Excellent sense of direction and very knowledgeable about humans in general and ocean geography. Talented dancer, street magician, and mime. Personal Weaknesses: Squid is far too curious for his own good. Life is one big adventure to him and there's nothing he won't try for a thrill. He's pretty shallow, he doesn't really have the emotional capability to be a loyal friend or even a companion. It's not in his hard wiring. He's just out for a good time and anything more than that out of him just doesn't happen. He has absolutely no interest in merfolk society or interests, and no real allies or ties in any pod. He's on his own. Since he's merfolk, he's mute in his human form, which can be a huge disadvantage if dealing with someone who doesn't know sign language and there's no pen and paper handy. Personal Strengths: Besides, his advantages as a merfolk, Squid is well traveled, communicates well for someone who can't talk and is a very talented performer. Family: His birth pod is probably still in the south Atlantic. He hasn't seen them in decades. As for any offspring, your guess is as good as his. Living Conditions: Currently, Squid is bumming around the lakes in the eastern Michigan area. He doesn't really need much and pretty much can carry everything he does need.
